The New England Buddhist Vihara and Meditation Center was established as a nonprofit religious organization in 2004 to equally serve both Buddhist and non-Buddhist communities living in the New England area. Currently the temple conducts meditation retreats, Dhamma school for children, Sil programs, Dhamma discussions, annual Buddhist celebrations and prayer ceremonies as well as cultural activities such as the Sri Lankan New Year. Throughout the past 12 years the congregation has grown in numbers and the need for more space has become an urgent necessity, especially for conducting Dhamma school for the ever-expanding student population and the highly attended events such as Meditation Retreats, New Year, Vesak, and Katina ceremonies.

In order to address these space requirements, we formed a Temple Building Committee (TBC) in late 2021 to discover all possible avenues. The TBC approach to the expansion of temple is threefold and is presented below (see Sections 2 & 3). The notion of establishing a nonprofit Meditation Learning Center under NEBV was also briefly discussed. The TBC also created the following sub-committees to perform different tasks so that the entire process moves forward more smoothly and efficiently. Each sub-committee includes at least four TBC members.

A summary of activities performed by the four sub-committees are described below as of April 2022:

1. Financial analysis and fund management:

The sub-committee analyzed the current fund situation and estimated that,
i. At least an additional $100,000 needs to be raised
ii. Regular monthly donations received need to be increased from $1,800 to $4,000

This was considered the minimal requirement to proceed with either options 2 or 3 below, as we believe all three options are still open.

2. Property search:

The sub-committee was active in finding a possible alternate site for the temple. They are looking to either:
i. Buy a land with a suitable standing building
ii. Buy a land with the intention to build a structure

The committee has looked at 2 properties already and analyzed their pros and cons, and are waiting for contractor’s estimates for property’s land preparation and improvement need before building the structure.

3. Expansion of Current Premises:

The sub-committee will continue to look into the possibility of expanding the current premises according to rules, regulations, and codes of the town.
